Shirley M. Madsen Wednesday, June 4, 1919 - Saturday, April 8, 2017

A former resident and leader in Walnut Creek, Shirley Madsen passed away peacefully on April 8th. She was born in San Francisco, the third child of John Albert and Hazel Knowles Marshall. She was predeceased by her first husband, John Wesley Burns, USMC (1946) then Louis George Madsen, Lt.Col. USMCR (1996). She was a trustee for the Walnut Creek School Board from 1954 – 1961. She was a member of the first committee in Walnut Creek that conceived of and spearheaded a hospital for the East Bay. That idea became John Muir Hospital. She served as a dispatcher for the Walnut Creek Police Department and as bookkeeper for St. Mary's College. She had great fun working for the Acalanes Union High School District at Del Valle High School, then Las Lomas High School. She is survived by her children Sharon (Bill) of Fremont, Diane (Ervin) of Walnut Creek, Bill (Ida) of Grass Valley, and Christine (Tony) of Camarillo. She was blessed with many grandchildren, great and great-great-grandchildren who all knew her as their beloved 'Nano'. A Celebration of Life was held on April 12th at the Carlton Senior Living Center in Pleasant Hill. Donations may be made on her behalf to the USO. (USO.org or P.O.
