Michael McNevin Monday, January 29, 1945 - Wednesday, May 24, 2017

Mike McNevin passed away May 24, 2017. Mike was born January 29, 1945 in Berkeley, California to William ("Bill") and June McNevin. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Linda, son Scott, daughter Kelly, son-in-law Mike Walker and his beloved grandson, Jackson Scott Walker. Mike spent most of his child and adult life living in Lafayette, CA. Growing up on Upper Happy Valley Road, he attended Valecito Elementary (now Bentley School) and graduated High School from Acalanes where he was on the golf team. He attended Diablo Valley College (also on the golf team) and then Armstrong Business College in Berkeley. After a short stint in the Navy, he began working for his father at the family car business in Berkeley, McNevin Cadillac. Eventually Mike took over the family dealership and worked there until he retired in 2006. Mike was a great car-salesman with the utmost integrity and a very loyal business man. Mike met his future wife Linda Fontes, a flight attendant at the time, in 1976 on a blind date. They were a great match! As they say, opposites attract; Mike was a quiet man while Linda was the life of the party! They were married February 12th, 1978 and lived briefly in Larkspur before moving to Lafayette at the end of 1978. Mike and Linda traveled extensively over the years honeymooning in the West Indies. Mike was a loyal family man, spending many weekends attending his children's activities as they were growing up, and going on great family vacations. Trips were taken to Lake Tahoe, Carmel, Arizona and Oregon (where both Scott and Kelly graduated from—Go Ducks). The families many vacations to Lake Tahoe when the children where young included activities such as skiing, boating, fishing, and relaxing on the beach. Carmel, another favorite spot, was filled with golf, taking the dogs to the beach and summer barbecues with friends and family. Mike volunteered as a golf coach at Bentley High School. He also volunteered tirelessly for the VNA Hospice Golf Fundraiser for many years at Orinda Country Club. Mike loved the outdoors; from golfing to hunting to fishing. Mike learned to play golf at Orinda Country Club (OCC) as a child, where his parents were members. His dad was President of the club in 1957. Mike and his family joined Orinda Country Club in 1985. Many of his favorite family activities at the club included Father/ Daughter dances, Easter Egg Hunts, Christmas Buffets and Golfing. Since he retired in 2006, his golf increased to 2-3 times per week at OCC. From Friday swaps, to Senior Matches to Club tournaments, he enjoyed all of the club activities. Mike even putted with his father's Otey Crisman, a hickory wood shafted putter which he used to make many birdies! Mike was frugal but generous. He was unpretentious and appreciated the simple things in life. Mike will be remembered as a dog lover, a man who enjoyed his wine and barbecuing (over coals only)! He loved 50's music, Casper's hotdogs and walking along Carmel Beach looking for golf balls. Most of all, Mike will be forever remembered as a great husband, great father and a man who loved his family fiercely. Mike will forever be in the hearts of his loving family.
