Dolores J. Burgess Monday, May 17, 1926 - Monday, July 17, 2017
Dolores J. Burgess, 91, of Clayton, California passed away peacefully on July 17, 2017. Dolores was born in San Francisco, California to Walter and Redell Carlson. She is preceded in passing by both her parents her brother Walter Carlson Jr., and her sister, Aileen Steele. She attended Monroe Elementary, Balboa High School and graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1947. She was president of the Girls Athletic Association in high school and her favorite sports were tennis and basketball. After graduating from nursing school she worked at Shasta County Hospital. While living in Redding, CA, she met her future husband, John R. Burgess, and they were married in 1954. They were married 32 years. John Burgess passed away in 2016. They moved to the Bay Area in 1954 and Dolores worked at San Francisco General Hospital. In 1961 the family moved to Concord, CA., and she worked at Contra Costa County Hospital and then John Muir Hospital, where she worked from 1965 until she retired in 1991. She had many hobbies. She loved gardening, tap dancing, travel, cooking, and she was a committed walker. She was an avid San Francisco Giants fan and was passionate about both watching the games on television and went to several home games. She also kept a running journal on their statistics. She loved raising her five children. Her family was very important to her and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her great happiness and joy. She will always be remembered for her smile, her fortitude, her integrity, her kindness, and her ability to turn any unpleasant situation into laughter. She moved to Diamond Terrace Retirement Community in 2011 and was known by the other residents and staff as “The Walker.” She will be dearly missed and hold a special place in our hearts. She is survived by her children, Scott (Patrick) Burgess, Marilyn Rawlins, Wendy (Rick) Clack, Yvonne (John) Del Bene and Joseph Burgess; four grandchildren, Sara Sumner, Melissa Moore, Gina Del Bene and Annemarie Del Bene; and eight great-grandchildren, Ava, Noah, Lyla, and Sawyer Sumner, John Ryan Vie, Robby, Maddie, and Kelly Moore. Memorial Mass will be held August 11, 2017 at 11:00AM at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, 5562 Clayton Rd. Concord, CA. 94521. A Celebration of Life reception will follow at Oakhurst Country Club, 1001 Peacock Creek Dr., Clayton CA. 94517.
